5/11/08 The Hills 3rd grade black team opened the day with a
Mother's Day breakfast on the field then entertained everyone with a
convincing 10-4 win over Manhasset. Everyone on the team contributed
in one way or another. The 2nd midfield line put a few in the back
of the net with Jared Breakstone having 2, Jenson Corabi scoring
once and picking up 6 groundballs, and Alexander Filacouris adding a
goal and scooping up 5 balls. Scoring also came from the "Fab Five"
with Tufano,Doran,Tiernan,Lulley and Mule' adding six goals, 3 in
the first 3 minutes of the game. Doran assisted on 4 of the goals,
while Tiernan and Lulley dominated the game at midfield. Rounding
out the starting middies was Jason Billings who had a dazzling
assist on a man up play while scooping up 3 ground balls. Sean
Gorman,Branson Leifer (nice crease play) and Anthony Cappadona
worked well at attack moving the ball and grabbing 3
groundballs.Jared Leff is looking more comfortable with each game
and made some nice plays on both ends of the field. The defense was
stellar, limiting the opposing team to very few scoring
opportunities. Leading the way were Jordy Nason, Danny Ryan (some
nice ground balls ) and Jeremy Shuster. This defensive unit was 5-5
in man down situations. Mikko Sims is getting better and better each
week, contributing on both ends of the field with 4 groundballs, 1
assist, and some great defensive moves. Charlie ricottoni played a
well rounded game in the goal making 6 saves and clearing safely in
all of his saves. The team missed Joe and Brandon who were out with
injury and illness.
4/27/08 The Hills 3rd grade black team beat Northport 8-2
with a superb performance turned in by Matthew Tufano who had a game
high 4 goals in the first 6 minutes and was asked by the ref not to
shoot anymore. The boys came out of the shoot hard and fast scoring
3 goals within the first 2 minutes. Sean Lulley had a game high 4
assists, while Kyle Tiernan 1, Ryan Doran 2, and Cameron Mule'1 all
contributed to the scoring. Overall the team played a very good
game!
04/13/08 The Hills 3rd grade black team played a tough combined
squad from CSH and managed a 8-8 tie. The game was very physical
with numerous penalties and hard checks. The goaltending by Charlie
Ricottoni was superb, making numerous 1v1 saves and executing all
his clears. Offensively the Hills boys were solid with Cameron Mule'
leading the charge with a couple of sweet goals. Ryan Doran chipped
in with 2 goals and 3 assists, Sean Lulley 2 goals, Matt Tufano, and
Kyle Tiernan each with one. Kyle and Sean held their own against a
solid face-off man. The defense was constantly on their toes with a
swarming offense from CSH but held their ground with Jordan Nason
and Alex Filacouris leading the way. Newcomer Joe Sanfratello has
added depth to the defense while Danny Ryan continues his solid
play.
04/06/08 The Hills 3rd Grade Black Team entertained East
Meadow on the turf and won 8-4. The front line of Doran, Mule',
Tufano, Tiernan, and Lulley once again proved to be overpowering in
dominating their opponent. All five of them scored for the 2nd
straight game with Doran and Mule' netting 2 each while dishing out
3 assists. The scoring also came from 2 newcomers, Jensen Corabi and
Branson Leifer. Leifer played a great game picking up his 1st
face-off win and adding 2 ground balls. The defense played better
this week with Danny Ryan, Joe Sanfratello, Jorden Nason, and Jeremy
Shuster pounding the other team into numerous turnovers. Charlie
Ricottoni was stellar in the goal and looks better with each game.
03/30/08 The 3rd grade
boys black team opened the season with a 12-7 victory over
Huntington Village. Jared Breakstone was given a game ball for his
first goal with Hills. Ryan Doran lead all scorers with 5 goals and
2 assists, while Cameron Mule', Matt Tufano,Kyle Tiernan, and Sean
lulley each added to the scoring. Lulley and Tiernan were
outstanding on faceoffs winning all 8 they took.Jensen Corabi ( a
1st year player ) added depth and speed to the lineup, constantly
forcing turnovers and picking up three ground balls. The defense was
solid with Danny Ryan holding down the fort, assisted by newcomers "
J connection" Jordy,Jeremy, and Joe. Charlie Ricottoni tended goal
and did an excellent job.

Ramaizel and in his first game Matt Gacek. Ground ball total went in
Hills favor as Andre Gomez, AJ Leva, Danny Boy Travis and Joey
Wulforst kept the ball off the ground.Gavin Tam shutout Northport in
the second half and was like a brickwall. Well done Gavin as always!
CJ Pasterak, Matt Makowski, Chris Luna, Nick
Dipietro, and Leva gave blood and took names at the office on Sunday.
Physical play and ball control was the name of the game for Drew
Quinto and Ramaizel as they went nuts on both sides of the ball.

04/13/08- WOW another crazy day in
lacrosse for Hills Gold 4. Hills lost 6-7 vs Wantagh. It was hard
fought battle against an extremely tough seasoned team. It started
off tough with Hills getting behind right away. The line of Riley
the Rocket, Leggs Luc, Devon the Burn, gassed up real quickly and
started to "D" the midfield line, they scooped ground balls up front
with the Rocket getting 3 with 1 goal, Leggs with 4, and the Burn
with 1.We broke this line up and we moved other players in to help
rest this over aggressive destructive machine. This line played hard
and fought every inch of the field. Where did they get the energy!
Jon B (1 ground ball), Jacob and Richie ran hard
pushing Wantagh to make the much needed mistakes so we could
transition to offense. Richie got a nice shot on the cage. Louis,
Andrew C, and Sean pushed it to the limit fighting Wantagh's attack.
Andrew D, Anthony P, Frank S, anchored the
defense. All 3 were banging heads and pushing Wantagh out of the
Zone to keep Max safe. They went from man to man to zone to keep the
shots out. Mighty Max had 7 saves and cleared the ball on the saves.
The attack of Nicky, Hunter (1 ground ball),
Ryan, and Scotty moved the ball through Wantagh's tough "D" Ryan had
4 ground balls and 3 goals. Scotty had 4 ground balls and 2 goals.
Ryan and Scotty switched from attack to middie. Scotty got mad and
Dumped the "D" of Wantagh passing to attack. Then we switched Ryan
to "D" where he punished Wantagh. Nicky M played attack on the X and
did all he could do to feed the shooters for the goals.
Once again Trev the Armor played all around for
us pushing Wantagh to make the needed mistakes, fighting through the
transition to make the clears.
The team came to life in the 4th quarter not
allowing any goals while scoring 2 of their own. The game got
physical and Hills wanted Wantagh's helmets on the turf. It got very
physical but stayed clean. We had the ball in the last 30 seconds
but couldn't get the shot in time to even the score. That last
quarter empowered these kids to know when you reach inside deep
enough you get satisfaction. We have a lot of new players and some
seasoned great kids, but it is teamwork that will give you
victories. And only teams will consistently win, not individual
players.
Keep the kids practicing at home and keep coming
to practice and work hard!
The coaches are very proud of this team!!
4/6/08- Wow I don't know if we can keep
this up, another Hills win, 7-4 against a very tough Garden City!!
Garden City Jumped out 1-0 then 1-1 then 2-1 then 3-1. We had our
backs against the wall, we were down 3-1. Our Team awoke!
Riley the Rocket had so many ground balls there
was not enough room on the page! well over 10 with 1 goal and 3
assists. He controlled the face offs which dominated our ability for
Hills to score. Anthony "Legs" Luc had 4 ground balls and 1 assist.
Legs spun thru traffic looking for the pass to feed and set up the
plays. Legs fought hard on the "D" with quick turnovers with the
"Rocket". Devon "The Burn" had 5 ground balls and helped set up the
offense, he fought well on the switch to slow the transition.
Scotty "Missle Man" got pressured and kept the
ball alive on the attack. He fed across the middle and set up the
shots. After getting warmed up he ran middie and transitioned the
ball to attack for victory. Missile man had 4 ground balls and 2
goals. Ryan "Laser Shot" fought hard to run down all defense that
entered his area. Four ground balls and 4 goals (really 5) his jump
shot with 2 seconds left in the half scores, but he gets cross
checked into the crease, they call it. Redemption is the Laser shot
as he shoots down the goalie, dropping him to the turf.
Trevor "The Armor" played "D" for today. Trev
fought hard to control the ball on defense and set up the clears for
the offensive, beating the attack up the sidelines. Trevs "D" helped
to keep GC out of shooting range. Andrew "Deluxe" Stayed "home" and
stopped anyone from entering shooting range. He protected Max like a
lion protects it's cubs. Anthony "Primi" drove Garden City far
enough back they could have stayed home. He drove the attack back
each time they attempted to move on the cage. Blair "Braxi" fought
hard to box out to get controll of the ball and stripped GC attack
of the shot. Blair got his stick on the feed to knock down Garden
Cities play.
The New players once again turned out to be key.
Hunter G fought hard on the attack controlling the loose balls and
feeding to his offense. Jon B ran wild on middie scooping 2 ground
balls and getting 1 shot off ( way to run hard Jon). Jakob played
hard fighting for control of the ball, he ran hard and fought GC at
every opportunity. Louis played hard staying in the face of the
attack not giving an inch in his defensive play. Andrew C played
hard hustling to get to the ball for the fight with GC. Sean
sprinted to recover the loose balls in the battle with the GC
offense.
Richie "H" came alive on his middie line driving
up field going left, going right , roll dodge, split dodge. Where
did he get this arsenal from!
Last but not least the Mighty MAX . Max
controlled the cage and the crease clamping loose balls like an
oyster holds it's pearl. Max had 8 saves. When I asked him what he
had for breakfast he said " A Garden City Sandwich!" . That was
before the game!
Be proud of these boys as they are learning to
play as a team. Teamwork will help win games. No one person is a
team. They need each other, they need to practice . Get the new
players on the pitchback this will help tenfold, the coaches can see
who practices at home and who attends team practice and we can see
it change week to week. So keep them playing.
3/30/08 Hills Gold Defeated Wantagh 7-4 on
the opening game of the season at Home.
We start the season with Mighty Max Lillian who
was commanding the cage as well as the crease like a warrior . Max
Had 10 saves
Our seasoned line of Riley
the Rocket Forte Faced off for the wins controlled the play, Anthony
Legs Lucarelli (just off the sick list), Devon "The Burn" Buono.
They led the charge on midfield controlling the ball with extreme
fire in the pass and switching to retake control on the defense when
possession switched. They proved no ground balls go unacounted for!
(by the way for the new people ground balls win games). These are the
Defensive and Offensive players(middies). The teams that don't fear
this line will soon learn they should have!!! Riley scooped 6 ground
balls 1 goal 2 assists Anthony Luc 3 ground balls 1 assist and 2
goals, Devon scooped 5 ground balls and 1 assist.
Now to the seasoned
defense! Andrew "Deluxe" Deluca- controlled the defense shielding
Max from enemy fire. Andrew controlled the ground balls and brought
the fight to Wantagh. Anthony "Primi" Primiano fought for the ball
controll and managed to get the clears even thru a ton of the fire
of the Wantagh attack. Blair "Braxy" Braxton Switched the switch to
high and fought the attack giving them nothing for free! Trevor "The
Armor" Anton, Trev played "D" hit them hard ,Trev played attack, hit
them hard, Trev played Mid, hit them hard. What can't he do?
BIG GUNS. Scotty faced off . Switched to attack
goes left, goes right, goes down the middle. Then fires the ICBM
shot, the goalie asks where the ball is, the defense tells him "back
of the cage". Ground balls 7 I can be pac-man too he replies!1
assist 1 goal 3 shots
Ryan "you want no part of me" Rogers. He then
proceeds to feed and fire lasers scoring at will. Lefty, Righty,
side arm, no problem fights for the ball taking controll of the real
estate as he wishes.2 goals 2 assists 2 ground balls
Now the New players,
Richie Hogan- Middie man in the making. Next to be the "new middie
line". Jon Behr Another middie speed ball being created. Hunter
Goldberge first New player to score this season (Hey Hunter-fire at
will). Frankie Sotomayer Defense monster in the making. I heard he
asked "how hard can I hit them!" Jakob Rubenstein learning to
control the "D" and run with the Middie. Andrew Chakos a little
attack a little "D" any where you need me! Vincent Aquino " just put
me in coach and I'll do it! Sean Kanyuk Playing "D" and fighting for
the ball.
Be proud of these kids The
new ones are tackling learning this fast track! It's not easy being
on the field and remembering all you need to know about this game
while trying to play.

06/08/08 - What a way to finish out a great season! Big Red
squared off in the blistering heat against our biggest rival
Huntington Village and came out ahead 8 –
6. When we last met on the turf field at HSE, we had the game of the
season (to that date) against a talented, savvy Huntington Village
squad and walked away with a 7-7, hard earned tie. We knew
yesterday’s game would be a battle, and magnified by the searing
heat.
Huntington Village got a jump on us with a quick
faceoff and run up the middle to put one in during the opening
seconds of the game. Then again, a few minutes later, our opponents
put another in. But true to form, our Big Red unit was not about to
get out of their game. Like calm professionals, they settled down
and looked to what they do best. Curtis Weingard opened up for us
with an unassisted goal in his first of what would be four in the
game. Then Ryan Coffey hit the back of the net with a crucial goal
to even us out and had a tremendous game at faceoff against one of
the best faceoff men (number 14) we’ve seen all year. The warriors
that they are, Huntington Village came back themselves and took the
lead one more time. Luke Longo was geared up to take one in and
tried a couple of times until he received a nice feed from Ryan
Coffey to tie the game 3 -3 going into the half. Huntington Village
came out strong in the second half and scored two more times before
Curtis hit back, followed by Matt Fattibene to once again bring us
neck and neck. At this point the Goodyear Blimp was overhead and an
ESPN Sports van was setting up shop along the tree line (well, they
should have been…)
–
just in time to see Big Red go up for the first time in the hotly
contested game from another shot by Curtis Weingard. Huntington
Village roared back with a tying score and what would be their final
goal in the game. Thomas Manetta, who unassumingly contributed so
much to the team’s success all season was finally rewarded when he
saw the net sway off a dynamic power shot that gave Tom his first
goal of the season and Hills our final lead. Justin Cerniello made a
quick, perfectly placed feed to Curtis Weingard that sealed the
deal.
But as we always say, that’s only half the story.
There were 10 other players on the field doing all the right things
too in order to make the win possible. Alex Bass worked the ‘X’ spot
like he’s been playing it for ever. He’s a natural. Ian Dean had a
killer game in goal, coming out and crunching Attackmen while saving
shots and transitioning clears. Paul DeCarlo left bodies on the
ground in his wake as he moved to stop cutters and pick up slides.
Aidan Hynes worked his stick checks like a kung-fu master with
staff. Derek Merckling had a stellar stint at Midfield. He can not
only shoot, he can run too! Josh Moosazadeh put shots on net and
pushed the Huntington Village defense until they softened up. Robby
Mora put on his groundball clinic but also had several great
clearing catches after getting open down the middle and looking for
the hit from Ian. Ryan Rosenberg played long stick Middie in a
man-down faceoff situation and ran it like he’s been doing it for
years! Ziemek Ryder schooled his Attackmen. Fear the Zim. Be very
afraid. And Jeremiah Sullivan out-cut, out-danced, out-ran and
out-classed his defenders.
But that’s what these men do. My heart is racing
and I’m geared up just recounting this game! Though we are so evenly
matched with this excellent Huntington Village team, our boys showed
why they have earned the nickname "BIG Red". Week in and week out
these guys put everything they have into their games. They have
matured as a team, as friends, as only those who share the trials of
competition can. There’s nothing small, average, medium, or common
about what these players have done and do. It’s big. It’s real big.
They are the real thing and the beauty of it all is that they have
earned it, together, through trials and tribulations, lows and
highs, and ultimately
– successes on every
level. This, gentlemen, is the way to end your season. What you have
accomplished this year goes beyond "the Creator’s game" or "Little
Brother of War". It reflects your very character and commitment.
That character and commitment is beyond reproach. EXCELLENT
JOB!
05/18/08 - Sunday Big Red went up against a very good Huntington
Village team and pulled even with them within the last few minutes
of a hotly contested game for a 7 – 7
finish. Both teams left everything they had on the field.
Defensively we gave a wallop to Huntington Village. Ziemek Ryder had
a clear-killing play at midfield that staved off an attack and
allowed us to turn the ball away. Aidan Hynes had his best
man-to-man game all year. True to form he picked out their biggest
guy and threw a body and flurry of stick checks on him that had the
Huntington Village player redirecting more than not. Jordan Eichholz
had a great clear after scooping through traffic and finding a
breaking Johnny Basil for a sweet combo-clear. Paul DeCarlo had
another blocked shot whose impact could be heard over in Commack. He
didn't tell me about this one - only the cool ones: off the mask,
back of the head, butt of the stick. Ryan Rosenberg is clearing like
a pro. RJ has a knack for a scoop-and-go technique that leaves
competitors gasping for breath.
Ian
Dean and Ryan Coffey had their hands full with very good shooters
and well executed plays. But they kept their heads in the game and
once again earned their reputation for killer Goalies with no fear.
Offensively Thomas Manetta controlled face-offs and when we really
needed it in the 4th quarter, the Machine stepped up big. Robby
"Visa" Mora went about his business of scooping up everything in his
path. I can not stress enough how important ground balls are for any
team and in determining the outcome of a game. The stat is tracked
at all levels including college and pro because it is just that
important. Great job Robby. Luke Longo was on a mission this game.
Showing his tremendous potential, he had several big clears for us
at Middie and contributed to good ball movement around the cage.
Ryan Lewis also stepped up at crunch time while banging with
Huntington Village's defense and moving the ball around the crease.
The leadership from Justin Cerniello is palpable on the field.
Though he didn't have any points on the board, his efforts on the
field up and down contributed in large part to keeping us on course
to finish as well as we did. Jeremiah Sullivan showed great
restraint and worked the ball at 'X' and from the wing to bring
constant pressure to Huntington Village's defense. Johnny Basil
again had a stellar game at midfield. He owns that middle ground.
From face-offs to groundballs to shots to breaking up clears, this
player does it all exceedingly well. Derek Merckling opened the
scoring for us with a quick and well placed power shot from left
wing Attack. Ryan Coffey (yes, our Goalies become an offensive
threat when moved out to the field too) soon followed with a super
goal off a feed from Curtis Weingard. Curtis then scored his first
in what would become a hat-trick of left-handed goals after
receiving a beautiful set-up pass from Alex Bass who continued to
control the offensive flow from his "X" spot. Josh Moosazadeh
patiently waited until the 4th quarter to bring out his famous guns
and leveled a shot past the goaltender off an assist from Ian Dean.
30
seconds left and the score is 7 – 6,
Huntngton Village. Everyone is engrossed in the game - players,
coaches, parents, even the teams waiting to take the next game were
pressed against the black chain link fence behind the boys. Matt
Fattibene, true workhorse who never says die, comes roaring down the
field full steam. Huntington Village slides to cut the threat off
but Ian Dean back-doors his defenseman and Matt bullets a feed
through traffic. Ian gets the ball, hears the Goalie coming, turns
and places the shot just right. Big Red goes even.
18
seconds left and Josh Moosazadeh has the ball behind the cage. He's
being chased but doesn't get flustered. He holds it and continues to
look for an opening. He sees one and feeds into the middle. It
catches someone's stick. There's a scramble in front of the net,
bodies fly, sticks are tangled - horn.
An
exciting end to a great game. I say it every week, not gratuitously,
but because it is from the heart: I can not be more proud of these
men. I asked them to get up early and hard on Huntington Village.
They did. The flow headed a bit in the opposite direction and I
called for them to settle down and play their game. They did. We
came within seconds of pulling it out. But the bottom line is that
the Men in Red hung in there, showed the spirit of the team they
have become, trusted each other and turned the tide of the game
around when we needed it. These guys are for real.
05/11/08 – Hills RED 3, Bethpage 4. Big Red came up short by
one goal in the last quarter to be edged out by a Bethpage team that
worked the ball well and had a solid defensive corps.
But there was still a lot to celebrate yesterday
in addition to Mothers’ Day! In spite of a slew of penalties, the
Men in Red had a good showing. Man-down efforts staved off 4 of 5
attempts. It was crunch time in the crease area as Paul DeCarlo was
not about to let someone waltz in on his Goalie and take a shot.
Soon the Bethpage boys were thinking twice before coming inside.
Aidan "the Assassin" Hynes had a great day both clearing the ball
and dominating his zone; his dogged efforts outside the zone also
killed many of the opponent’s sets. Ziemek Ryder showed amazing
quickness and excellent checking as well as passing to keep his area
controlled in the face of a pressure offense. Ryan Rosenberg who
runs like a deer continued to check, cause a loose ball, scoop and
take it coast to coast. Berg’s unique style and awesome speed are
perfect compliments to our defensive squad. Jordan Eichholz pulled
off several clearing passes and played exceptional body positioning
all day. In net, Ian Dean had a great game that included three
stuffs, great clearing passes and joined in the crunch fest around
the crease (this team loves to bang).
Offensively Big Red lived up to their name. We
controlled the ball when we had it and there was very good
communication all around. Justin Cerniello showed once more why he
is a leader on this squad with amazing checks, constant ball work,
total team effort. Tom Manetta dug in and gave us face-offs when we
needed them and contributed widely across the field defensively and
offensively. Johnny Basil was energizing with his stick work; he has
a knack to get into the right places at the right time to either
break up an opponent’s offensive set or work out one of our own.
Curtis Weingard moved the ball well and contributed at the face-offs
to help us gain control. Robby Mora was a work horse once again;
appearing at crucial times end to end, he was like our version of
the "Visa" card
–
everywhere you want him to be. Ryan Lewis showed us some of the
reasons why we love him: he was switching hands, hitting opponents,
grabbing ground balls, and driving the net. While Derek Merckling
has the size for Defense, he has the drive and heart of an Attackman;
with his considerable stick skills this rookie drove the net
numerous times and threatened all day, forcing Bethpage to give him
his due respect. Alex Bass controlled ‘X’ and made several great
feeds from behind the cage while directing the offensive movement;
he has found his spot for sure.
Off the opening face off, Bethpage got a lucky
shot off to take the lead. Josh Moosazadeh opened up the scoring for
us with an unassisted goal in the first quarter. The pitched battle
ensued throughout the first half and we went into the second half in
a 1-1 tie. Luke Longo, who has grown exponentially this season,
would have none of it and returned the favor shortly after by
driving through the opponent’s defense and hitting the back of the
net to even us up. In the third quarter Bethpage put one in while we
were a man down. Matt Fattibene stepped up in the fourth quarter and
drilled one to put us even once more. Unfortunately, Bethpage was
able to get one more goal late in the fourth that gave them the
game.
I feel
we were the better team yesterday and the biggest impact to the game
was our penalty time again. We racked up a total of 6 penalties for
5-1/2 minutes. Indeed, one of Bethpage’s goals came on a man-down
situation for us as we tried to ride out a Hills penalty. But as I
told the men in the final huddle, keep your heads up. You gave 100%
today and I am proud of each and every one of you. No one gave up.
Every one contributed. Every one played hard. They had a very good
game yesterday against a worthy opponent and it could have gone our
way just as easily as not. This team rocks!
05/04/08 - Wow! Another huge showing for 5th Grade Red Team.
Plainedge came to the Upper Field to play the Men in Red on our home
turf. The spectators would be treated to a spirited, exciting game,
with Hills finishing on top 10 – 6.
In a repeat showing from the prior week, Big Red shared the love
with everyone contributing to a win over our toughest opponent to
date. Plainedge was a well disciplined, explosive team. However, our
boys played their own game from start to finish. Defensively Ian
Dean and Ryan Coffey were nothing short of superb in the net. A
flurry of shots and several fast breaks were simply shut down. Paul
DeCarlo again had a couple of blocked shots (Plainedge had the guns
to score, no question) while controlling the middle and Ziemek Ryder
turned in his best game to date, completely dominating his man. Ryan
Rosenberg once again made solo clears across midfield with
break-neck speed. Aidan Hynes and Jordan Eichholz anchored the
defense with well timed slides and solid communication. Derek
Merckling was slotted in at defense and man-handled his opponents.
Offensively we racked up 10 goals among 7 players
– with multiple assists. Johnny Basil had
2 goals and a solid showing at face-off. Justin Cerniello had an
assist, a goal, and great reads for passing. Alex Bass had an assist
and 2 goals in one of his personal best games. Matt Fattibene tucked
a goal in and worked the field for some crucial groundballs. Curtis
Weingard also had an assist, 2 goals and a slew of groundballs
himself while bringing his speed to the face-off. Luke Longo,
playing Attack Sunday, made a sweet feed to assist one of our goals.
Thomas Manetta dominated face-offs once again and controlled the
middle as topside Middie. Ryan Lewis sprinted down the side of the
restraining box and made a picture-perfect switch from right to left
to avoid the checks. He looked like a seasoned pro out there. Josh
Moosazadeh was a workhorse with a goal and controlling several
set-ups offensively. Robby Mora retains the title for most
groundballs and combined a nice assist to round out an excellent
game. Jeremiah Sullivan contributed a goal and was key to the ball
work around the cage.
What
this all boils down to: Big Red was clicking on all cylinders during
this game. It came together. Everyone contributed unselfishly as is
the trademark of this team. Defensively we have been stymieing our
opponents with superior goaltending and a smothering defense.
Offensively we have been bringing tremendous pressure from
everywhere. Our Midfielders are controlling the field while our
Attack are moving the ball exceptionally well. In the last two games
we have scored 18 goals - an accomplishment in itself, but all the
more impressive when you consider that 8 different players scored on
multiple assists in the earlier game and 7 individual players scored
again with several assists in our last game. That’s a nightmare for
a defensive coach. More players have the capability to score than
they have defenders to stop it. I am, as always, tremendously proud
of these men. They have done a spectacular job.
04/26/08 - Big Red earned their name this weekend by coming
up big for an 8 – 4 win over Floral Park. Initially the field was
the scene of a pitched (and dusty) battle between the two teams
until Big Red struck first with Curtis Weingard opening up the drive
with a nicely placed goal. That score was soon followed by Luke
Longo’s second drive to the net where he showed Floral Park he would
not be denied his first goal of the season. Floral Park came back
hard with a score off an early face off in the second quarter and
put another in a short time later. One more came by way of a dust
storm kicked up in a scramble in front of our net that somehow ended
up with the ball trickling in to let Floral Park take a lead a few
minutes before the half. No one saw the ball until the dust cleared!
Josh Moosazadeh stepped up and put one in for Big Red to tie the
game up again. Matt Fattibene then followed that with his own to
give the Hills men a go-ahead goal as the tumultuous half came to an
end.
The second half saw our boys settle down a bit
and play their game. The 3rd quarter went scoreless and the
excitement grew. Leadership was called upon and the men in Red came
storming back big time in the fourth. Ian Dean opened the quarter
with an excellent bounce shot goal off an assist from Matt Fattibene
roaring down field. Floral Park answered with a quick goal
themselves. Curtis Weingard fed Jeremiah Sullivan to give us a 6-4
lead. Then, Johnny Basil bull-dodged his way through to plant a
picture perfect shot in past the Goalie’s left side. Derek Merckling
sealed the deal with a rocket that squeezed between the pipe and the
Goalie’s right leg. Big Red came up big.
But it wasn’t just about the scoring
– it never is with
this team. We saw lots of good things yesterday that directly
impacted our ability to pull this game out from a deficit in the
first half. Ryan Rosenberg lit up the field with his surprising
speed to take the ball over the midfield not once, but three times.
Paul DeCarlo had two blocked shots and the bruises to prove it.
Ziemek Ryder got in the way of a third Floral Park shot. Aidan Hynes
made stick checks that would leave a college coach smiling. Ian Dean
and Ryan Coffey again showed that Big Red’s cage is a "no-go zone"
for our opponents with exceptional tending and clearing efforts all
around. Robbie Mora took the title of "most ground balls" yet again
(he’s a vacuum out there) and those ground balls led to our control
of a good part of the game. Ryan Lewis was open several times and
got a few shots off at Floral Park’s cage. Alex Bass had four shots
on net but lady luck was not on his side yesterday. She’ll be there
next week against Plainedge. While at Attack, Ryan Coffey’s stick
helped us work the ball around the cage as we pressed for openings
in the Floral Park defense. Thomas Manetta’s face-offs continued to
excel with great results. Particularly in the second half, his
efforts helped us maintain a healthy 63% face-off ratio and again,
maintain control of the ball.
At least three of our
goals came with three or more players touching the ball before the
shot went in. That’s a beautiful thing to watch. Ball movement is
coming along well. Again several of our goals came assisted, and
eight separate players scored in this game proving the team concept
lived by this squad. Scouting the team will do no good for our
opponents – each player can be an offensive and defensive threat.
That’s exactly where a coach wants his team to be. Excellent job by
the men in Red!
04/13/08 - Big Red rolled back in to
Bellmore ready for another good game, this time against their Gold
team. We weren't disappointed.
At Attack, Josh Moosazadeh opened the scoring off
an assist from Matt Fattibene, and went on to put another into the
net the following quarter. Alex Bass had a sweet feed to help round
out the scoring. Derek Merckling put a shot on goal and made a key
check-to-loose ball. Ryan Lewis continued to develop and was an
outlet pass several times. Jeremiah Sullivan had several shots on
goal including a real nice move from behind the cage to pop one off.
Midfield continued to dominate. Matt Fattibene
assisted Moose's first goal and seemed to be in all the right places
at the right times to contribute heavily to the flow of the game.
Justin Cerniello won face-offs, scored off an assist from Alex Bass
noted above, and lead the men in ground balls. Luke Longo was back
in his element at Midfielder with a shot and several ground balls.
Rob Mora had a shining moment when he signaled the team to get our
"Army" play started and began working the ball around. He also had
several shots on goal. Thomas Manetta played good, hard Lacrosse and
it showed in his face-offs, groundballs and shot on goal. Curtis
Weingard had two shots, face-off wins and several ground balls.
Defensively, Ian Dean and Ryan Coffey had great
games again. Both were active out of the net and made game-saving
plays; Ian with an off-stick shoulder save at close range and Ryan
with a low right shot from 5 yards off the crease.
Paul DeCarlo continued to work the crease
position with a great slide that shut down a fast break and allowed
our Middies to get down field. Ryan Rosenberg had two solo clears
that showcased his speed and athleticism. Ziemek Ryder played a
physical game that signaled to Bellmore they were not welcome on our
end of the field. Aidan Hynes stick checking resulted in
check-to-loose-balls that turned possession back to us.
Great job against Bellmore. Now we look forward
to taking on Floral Park. Bring it.
04/06/08 - Hills 5th Grade RED beat a
tough Bellmore team 4 - 3 on a cold, wind-swept field Sunday for a
nail-biter of a game.
Let's start with the finish: we were able to
stave off Bellmore's onslaught as we spent the last 23 seconds
two-men down. While I never want to be man-down (let alone two-men
down...), this game showed exceptional defensive play by the squad
out there.
In Goal both Ian Dean and Ryan Coffey had great
halves with good communication, active play, making big game saves
when needed most and pushing the clears. Defensively Paul DeCarlo
and Ziemek Ryder looked good with well-timed slides and aggressive
play. Aidan Hynes and Ryan Rosenberg both had big
checks-to-loose-ball plays. Jordan Eichholz had a big stop in the
middle of the restraining box, then turned the ball around with a
pass to a waiting Middie for a fast break. Luke Legs Longo continued
to make a big impact in his defensive assignment with dogging
Bellmore's Attack and helping to disrupt their ball movement.
At Midfield, Justin Cerniello and Rob Mora put
another two points up in between vacuuming up ground balls. Johnny
Basil continued to demonstrate his offensive prowess with a
beautiful assist. Curtis Weingard and Matt Fattibene had good
face-off results. Thomas Manetta was a work horse for us once again
and is an impact player for the squad.
Alex Bass opened the scoring with a well-placed
shot off a feed to get the boys jumping. Jeremiah Sully Sullivan was
just getting warmed up with an assist and a goal himself. Derek
Merckling had a handful of shots on the net again this week as he
continued to find his shooting spot again and again. Ryan Lewis
played a tough Attack position and got a shot off as well. Rounding
out the Attack performance was Joshua Moosazadeh who remains a
threat from anywhere in the box by keeping the offensive pressure
on.
Bellmore was a good, tough team capable of
pulling Sunday's game out. Compiling almost 6 minutes in penalties
put our team in a precarious position and we will work as a team to
minimize those going forward. It is the toughness and never-say-die
attitude which our boys maintain that allowed us to stop Bellmore's
well-organized man-up efforts. Solid accomplishments in this week’s
game: good defense all day, exceptional ball movement as a team,
good switching of the hands. Kudos to the men who showed their
colors yesterday - TEAM RED!!!
03/31/08 - Great way to start the season!
Hills Red opened up big and fast with the opening faceoff and never
looked back in our decisive 4 - 0 win over Harborfields. We
dominated the game from beginning to end.
Though a good indicator of how well the team was
playing, our Goalie and defensive unit saw very little action. There
was one shot on goal, with the ball being on our end of the field
perhaps a half-dozen times. As a coach I could think of worse
situations. When the ball did come over the line, Aidan Hynes,
Ziemek Ryder, Paul DeCarlo and, making his debut at defense, Luke
Longo were quick to get on the attackers and turn the game back up
field. Ian Dean had one shot against and chased the ball to the end
line to gain possession for Hills.
Jeramiah Sullivan opened the scoring by putting
one in from the crease, and worked the ball around nicely for the
bulk of the game. At Midfield, good hustle all day up and down.
Tommy the Machine Manetta had a great faceoff and popped the ball
out through his opponent for a clean scoop and go. Matt Fattibene
had a beautiful feed to Josh Moosazadeh who was placed on the top
left of the crease, for a goal. Justin the Tank Cerniello scored one
and also fed newcomer Derek Merckling for another nice set-up to put
one in. Johnny Basil, Curtis Weingard and Robbie Mora had a huge
presence on the field in controlling the flow of the game and
keeping the offensive pressure up on Harborfields. Robbie was a
vacuum on ground balls. Ryan Lewis mixed it up well in his first
test in a game-situation and Alex Bass handled the X spot with
confidence and authority.
Ball work was good, dependable and key to our
play in this game. Communication was also big. The players came
together as a team and showed they are a force to be reckoned with
this season. I am proud of each and every one of the boys. Great
job!

4 /13/08
- Hills 7 Lynbrook 4. The Hills team traveled to
Lynbrook for their first away game of the season. The long car ride
must have made them tired as Lynbrook came out with an early 2 - 0
lead. After a timeout the team came alive with the Hills defense of
Jordan Shapiro, Joey Longo, Al Falussy and Steven Fischer shutting
down the offense of Lynbrook. With his first start of the season
goaltender Eric Mikelinich registered over 10 saves and showed some
fancy footwork running up the field and getting an assist. The
"Shark" attack line of Derek "The Sniper" Kahn, Ian D'Silva and
Thomas Schaefer accounted for 5 goals DK (2) D'Silva (2) and
Schaefer (1). The other two goals were scored by Justin Rothstein
who had a breakout game playing midfield. Attack and Midfielders Ian
Zund, Zach Goldglit, Kevin Glaudin, Mike Aronica and Jake Gellar
proved that size doesn't matter as the scrapped and scoped their way
to winning ground balls, while middies Taylor Gelderman, Scott
Scheinthal and Jake Burcham used their size with some hard hits and
takeaways. It was solid performance by the whole team. After the
game there were still rumors on the bench about soccer with the
question being asked "Isn't soccer a Fall sport"!
4/06/08 - Hills 6 Harborfields 0
Hills came out on fire with Jake "The Snake"
Burcham winning the opening face off and firing a rocket pass to
Derek Kahn who blasted it past the Harborfields goalie less then 10
seconds into the game. The Hills offense never looked back with Kahn
later scoring two more goals for his first "hat trick" of the year.
Michael Aronica, Thomas Schaefer and Ian D'Silva all had their first
goals of the season to round out the rest of the scoring. Overall
the Hills offense had good passing and won on ground balls. The
Hills defense Jordan Shapiro, Al Falussy, Joey Longo and Steven
Fischer came ready to play allowing Harborfields less then ten shots
on rookie goalie Justin Rothstein, who registered his first win and
shut out. After the game it was rumored that some of the new players
were saying "this game is much better then soccer, you can hit"! It
was a solid performance by the entire team.

3/30/08- Bayville 4 Hills 4 -The 6th grade Gold team started
the season against a more experienced Bayville team. With a lot of
hustle we went out to a 4 to 2 halftime lead. Bayville however
refused to lay down and tied up the game at 4. The last minute was
very exciting with Tyler Tam missing on a one on one with the goalie
to try and give us the lead. Nick Pellegrino Led the team with 3
goals and 1 assist. Tyler Tam had one goal and Jon Sammis and Tyler
McGowan each had an assist. The real story was the physical defense
that we showed. Tyler McGowan and Louis Lupinacci leveled the
Bayville attacker as tried to come around the crease. Ethan Muller,
Paul Barbieri, and Chris Baransky also did a great job protecting
the net. All in all a good start to the season.

3rd & 4th Grade Girls Team
6/07/08-The 3rd/4th Grade Lady Pride finished out their
undefeated season with a win over Massapequa in the Nassau PAL
Jamboree on Saturday morning. It was a hot day…but not as HOT as our
attack led by Paige Weiss (4 goals, 1 assist) who had 3 of the first
4 goals of the game. The girls were up 4 – 1 before Massapequa knew
what hit them. Was it the heat wave? No, it was OUR girls putting
the heat on them. The defense was solid… led by Emily Appenzeller (2
goals, 4 saves) playing in goal in the first half with 4 saves and
some very nice clears. Our defense shut down the opposition with
numerous groundballs by Rachel Pabisch, Toni Lombardo, Colleen
Schieck, and Ilana Sherman. Ilana saved her best game for last…she
fought for a groundball that stopped Massapequa from going on a run
in the 1st half and she made an awesome pass to our midfield who
then passed to our attack for a goal. THAT is the way lacrosse is
played…we moved the rock so well on Saturday that not even the 90
degree heat could slow us down.
Fast
forward to the second half…we continued moving the ball with the
help of Julia Pascarella who had a very pretty assist and Alexis
Gordon who helped our offense keep possession. Reanna Notarantonio
was attacking the ball and dishing out assists along with Alyse
McAlpine who had 2 very important groundballs to go along with her
goal and assist! Isabella DeCarlo played well moving the ball to
help Mackenzie Ciuffetelli score a goal. Also on the groundballs was
Carlene Scaravaglione who had 2 key scoops and a very nice assist to
keep us on top. Paulina DiFatta showed off her passing skills again
making 2 assists and numerous groundballs to finish off the season.
Also having a fine morning was Kelsey Collins sharing the rock with
her 3 assists to go along with her goal.
But,
before the celebration of our undefeated season…Massapequa went on a
run. Not a problem…with a penalty shot that could’ve put Massapequa
only 1 goal away from tying the game, Kelly Lennon in goal (4 saves)
stopped the shot with her knee. That stop allowed us to move the
ball up the field to Emily Appenzeller who scored the goal to put us
safely ahead. None of us remember who scored our final goal of the
game…did not matter to any of the girls we asked …all they said was
"it was made by all of us!" THAT is the definition of TEAM! Final
score was Hills over Massapequa 10 – 7.
The
coaches would like to thank all the parents that made this season
special…from getting our girls to early Sunday morning practices in
January to helping with snacks, drinks, and oranges for the games. A
special shout out to Ray Scaravaglione for keeping our team
statistics this season along with an assist from his wife Rose
Scaravaglione, and Paul Decarlo. And of course, every girl that took
the field for us this season…THANK YOU!
6/01/08-It was Sunday June 1st and 75 degrees, but it felt like
it was late July with temperatures on the field above 90 degrees.
The water bottles were boiling and our girls were on FIRE AGAIN!
Sunday
was an unusual day, Coach Dominick wasn’t there and Mackenzie was
off winning ribbons at her horse show. So what were we to do? Well
our day began a little slow as visiting Lynbrook took the lead 1st.
Not missing a beat our rocket attack Paige Weiss (4 goals 2 assists)
and Carlene Scaravaglione (2 goals/3 assists) decided to show a
little Razzle Dazzle and confused the Lynbrook goalie and got us
back into the lead. Speaking of goalies, Emily Apenzeller played the
first half with three nice saves and excellent defensive skills
while playing midfield in the second half. Kelly Lennon decided it
was her turn to take over at the goal in the second half and decided
to stop the Lynbrook team multiple times with some great saves and
awesome clears. Way to keep you head up Kelly.
Defense
and Speed was going to be needed to sustain our lead. Colleen
Schieck, Toni Lombardi and Illeana Castellanos dodged and weaved
there way through the piles and got the ground balls. Alyse MclApine
(who had a goal called back) and Rachael Pabisch of the new dynamic
duo defense players kept the Lynbrook squad scrambling in circles as
they contained them and kept them away from our cage. Speaking of
defense, did you hear that Hallie Eichholz and Ilanna Sherman didn’t
let there attackman touch the ball in the 2nd half for over 10
minutes.
We have
a motto "Ground balls wins games" well Isabella Decarlo decided to
listen to that and scrambled late in the 2nd half for loose ball and
had a great fast break which almost led to a goal. Next time
Isabella.
After
being up 4 goals most of the 2nd half, the Lynbrook squad made a
late push and scored 2 unanswered goals leaving the Hills Pride only
a 1 goal lead with under 5 minutes left. What were we to do? Timeout
was called, mouth pieces were cleaned, the goggles were tightened,
they growled and looked mean and then it was showtime. Reanna
Notarantonio (3 assists) who with her tenacious defense and
aggressive attack on the ground balls got the ball and brought it
down field to set up our final attack.
With
only 2 minutes left to play Paulina DiFatta (3 goals/ 1 assist ) and
Kelsey Collins (1 goal and 1 assist) sealed the game each with a
goal to secure our 10-7 victory. What a great job by all.
5/17/08-The Lady Pride remain unbeaten with a 9 – 5 victory over
Bayville. Today’s surprise was brought to you by Toni Lombardo
stepping up to play goalie in the 2nd half of today’s game with 3
saves and 2 nice clears. The opponents got to see our secret
weapon…the smallest player on the field dodging everyone in her way
to score a goal…way to go Samantha Longo! The coaches lost count of
how many passes were picked off and the forced turnovers that were
caused by Alyse McAlpine, but WOW…someone get that girl a cape.
Ilana Sherman picked up more ground balls today than we’ve seen from
her all season long. Nice game Ilana! Illeanna Castellanos had one
of her best games as well with some nice ground balls and offensive
play. We have seen Rachel Pabisch improve by leaps and bounds from
the early days of practicing indoors. Today we saw Rachel play one
of her best games of the year. Did you see Alex Matos pick apart the
other team picking up loose balls and advancing the ball up
field…way to go Alex! Even though we only had 2 subs on our
sideline…the officials had to stop and count how many Hills players
were on the field because they couldn’t believe their eyes. We were
everywhere that ball was! So what we were shy 6 players today…it
didn’t matter…we had Julia Pascarella and Alexis Gordon on the field
leaving the opposition flat on their heels. Yeah…Julia and Alexis
got game…bring it on! Reanna Notorantonio had the best game we have
seen from her in two years. Reanna intercepted passes, picked up
ground balls, and still found time to score 4 goals before she was
done. Another fine day was had by Carlene Scaravaglione who
continues to get better each game with her contribution of a goal
and 2 assists. Mackenzie Ciuffetelli stepped out of the goal in the
2nd half to help move the ball down the field and even scored a goal
to boot. Then of course we have our dynamic duo, Paige Weiss and
Kelsey Collins…just like Bonnie & Clyde, Butch & Sundance, Smith &
Wesson they shoot the life out of any goalie standing in our way.
Paige had a goal and 3 very nice assists and Kelsey had a goal and 2
key assists. That’ll teach any team not to play “bush league” doing
deputy clears instead of having the goalie clear the ball…come
on…we’re supposed to be learning how to play lacrosse. WAY TO GO
LADY PRIDE!
5/11/08
-
Today our unbeaten Lady Pride Team faced an unbeaten Syosset team
and played their hearts out in "The Mother’s Day Battle" that ended
in a 10 – 10 tie. The game allowed every
mom to go home with a winner! This game saw many lead changes and
taught our girls to never take an opponent lightly and to NEVER,
EVER give up. After being down 5 – 3 at
halftime our team turned it up a notch and took over on groundballs
in the 2nd half. Emily Appenzeller kept us in the game in goal for
the 1st half with 7 saves. Her fresh legs ignited our offensive play
in the 2nd half with her dominating play on faceoff and 2 goals and
an assist. Illeanna Castellanos held down the fort in the 2nd half
with her 2 key saves in goal to preserve our tie game. Paige Weiss
brought her "A" game today lighting up the back of the net with 4
goals and an assist. Kelsey Collins played one of her best games of
the year as well recording 2 goals and 4 assists. The unselfish play
of Carlene Scaravaglione helped our offense score by dishing out 2
very nice assists. One of our toughest players on the field picking
up ground balls and intercepting passes today was Reanna
Notarantonio and she had 2 beautiful assists to boot. Paulina
DiFatta was everywhere…playing with such tenacity she helped in our
battle today with 1 goal and an assist. Look up fervor in the
dictionary and you will find Alyse McAlpine who plays with such
intensity. Her contribution was much more than her key goal and
gorgeous assist. Taking control on faceoff was Colleen Schieck with
some fine playing. Strong offensive play was also shown by our three
"donna fine" Toni Lombardo, Isabella DeCarlo, and Mackenzie
Ciuffetelli. All of this was brought to you today by our battle on
the defensive end of the field. Today’s superheroes were none other
than Rachel Pabisch, Kelly Lennon, Ilana Sherman, and Alex( coach
…don’t call me Alexandra) Matos. Bravissimo Ladies!
5/04/08- The 3rd/4th grade Lady Pride Team had a field day
today with a 10 – 2 win over Hewlett. The key to our win today was
our defense. Rachel Pabisch was outstanding with 6 ground balls and
caused 2 turnovers with her close defense. The combination of
Illeana Castellanos, Alex Matos, Kelly Lennon, Toni Lombardo, and
Ilana Sherman allowed our opponents only 6 shots on goal. Way to Go
DEFENSE! Emily Appenzeller made 2 very nice saves in goal in the 1st
half. Kelsey Collins played in goal the 2nd half and was just as hot
with 2 saves and 1 very nice clear; but that’s not all…Kelsey had 4
goals in the 1st half as well. The warrior on our team is none other
than Alyse (Tough as Nails)McAlpine who is the glue that keeps our
offense together with her many ground balls and assists…and that was
after her injury. Paulina DiFatta, what more can you say…she was
everywhere today, not only did Paulina have 2 assists but she also
intercepted passes and allowed us to keep the ball on our offensive
side of the field. Our attack was superb with Paige Weiss scoring 2
goals and handing out an assist. Mackenzie Ciuffetelli had her
breakout game with her 1st goal of the season and 2 assists as well.
Colleen Schieck was back in rare form with 1 goal. Carlene
Scaravaglione showed off her passing skills handing out 2 assists
and fine play on both sides of the field. Midfielders were awesome
led by Reanna Notarantonio who had 1 goal and 1 assist to go with
her numerous groundballs. Then there was Julia Pascarella who
displayed some very fine passing skills and a goal to show for her
terrific effort. Isabella DeCarlo and Hallie Eichholz also had a
fine afternoon helping our team to remain undefeated. GO LADY PRIDE!
4/27/08- The 3rd/4th grade Lady Pride were back in action on
Sunday after an extended absence. The convincing 10
– 5 win against Bellmore/Merrick was the
best team effort so far this year with 10 goals coming from 7
different ladies and 8 assists from 6 different players. Paige Weiss
scored 2 goals and dished out an assist, and that was only in the
1st half. She was a tremendous help on defense in the 2nd half.
Emily Appenzeller was incredible in goal in the 1st half with 4
saves, and dominated the 2nd half with 2 goals and an assist.
Illeana Castellanos played solid defense in the 1st half before
tending goal in the 2nd half with 3 beautiful saves and 3 nice
clears. Paulina DiFatta had a fine afternoon with 2 terrific goals
to show for her incredible effort. Carlene Scaravaglione came
through with an awesome goal against a strong goalie. Kelsey Collins
showed her versatility with a goal and assist with some fine
passing. Then we had Isabella De Carlo score her 1st career goal
going one on one against the opposition. Also scoring her 1st goal
was Hallie Eichholz coming through in the clutch. The scoring was
made possible from the numerous ground balls and 2 assists from
Alyse McAlpine who is the key to our offense keeping possession of
the ball. Reanna Notorantonio played a solid game recording 2
assists to go along with all those ground balls as well. Samantha
Longo may be our youngest and smallest player on the field, but
someone forgot to tell her. Samantha had an assist and a few hard
fought ground balls and plays with more heart than size…way to go
Samantha. Alex ( don’t call me Alexandra!) Matos played well on both
offense and defense again today. Toni Lombardo, Ilana Sherman and
Mackenzie Ciuffetelli played hard for the Lady Pride this afternoon
on both sides of the field as well. A special thank you goes out to
Jessica Coffey and Alexis Gordon who played outstanding in
contributing to our win today.
4/06/08-The 3rd/4th Grade Team added another win to their
resume with a 9 – 6 hard fought win
against Plainedge on Sunday. It was a breakout game for Emily
Appenzeller who had 2 goals and 3 assists. We had Alyse McAlpine
come through with a clutch goal for the Lady Pride team. Paulina
DiFatta was awesome with her playing and a goal to show for it.
Scoring 2 gorgeous goals on attack was Kelsey Collins. Then of
course, there was the scoring coming from Paige Weiss with 3 goals
and 1 assist. The biggest contribution to our scoring was led by
Carlene Scaravaglione with 3 assists. The true warriors of our team
are the ones that start our offense by playing hard nosed defense
and scrapping for those groundballs. Reanna Notorantonio took the
lead for us on those loose balls being picked up and brought to the
offensive side of the field. With the help of players like Julia
Pascarella, Samantha Longo, Bridget Cornetta, Toni Lombardo, Kelly
Lennon, Isabella DeCarlo, and Hallie Eichholz there may be no
stopping us this year. Then there was our defense led by Illeana
Castellanos with help from Colleen Schieck stopping the opposition
from getting near our goalie, Mackenzie Ciuffetelli, who played well
with 6 saves on the day. A special thanks to Coach Tim Collins and
Cara Pascarella who filled in for the referees who were missing in
action (I heard they were picking up our uniforms and trophies). The
Lady Pride Team will be back in action next week when we face
Jericho for our first away game of the season.
3/31/08-The 3rd/4th Grade Girls Team started off the season with a 5
- 0 win against Bethpage. Paige Weiss led the team on attack with 4
goals while Colleen Schieck added 1 goal to seal the win. The team
looks real strong with the returning talent of Alyse McAlpine,
Paulina DiFatta, Reanna Notarantonio, and Carlene Scaravaglione on
midfield. Also returning is Kelsey Collins playing strong on Attack
and Mackenzie Ciuffetelli moving from midfield to goalkeeper for us
this year. Watch out for the new players coming on board. Emily
Appenzeller showed her speed and nose for the ball while Kelly
Lennon, Ilana Sherman, Illeana Castellanos gave us a glimpse of
their talent. Big contributions on Sunday also came from Isabella
DeCarlo, Hallie Eichholz, Toni Lombardo, Alexandra Matos, and Rachel
Pabisch. We have no shortage of talent this year and expect only
good things to show for all our hard work on the field.

5th Grade Girls Team
5/18/08 – 5th Grade Girls
– Hills 11 –
Farmingdale 9. These girls looked real good today and their good
looks extended even after the photo shoot and into the game. We had
25 kids and they all came to play and they played real well. The
adage in lax is ground balls win games. A ground ball on defense
seems to be extra special. The following defenders had TWO or more
ground balls: Alexa Valla, Paige Gladstone, Megan Pastier, and
Cheryl Feig. Valla, Pastier and Feig had their finest games yet and
have taken their game to the next level. All together 14 of our kids
collected ground balls some of the others are: Brase, Lulley,
Casadonte, Caiazza, Travis, Koval, Goldberg, Anton, Muratore and
Toles. That is an impressive number.
Mackenzie Kober, Casi Caizza and Emily Travis solidified our attack.
Each one of them scored a goal today. Kober chipped in with 2
assists and is doing a great job running without the ball. We need
to get the ball to her more when she is open and we need our other
attack players to ride like she does. Casi was consistent like she
normally is and Emily Travis got herself into the action on numerous
occasions. Her 3 ground balls certainly helped.
Farmingdale had two solid midfield lines and they may have been
undefeated before today. Their midfield is obviously their strength;
it is ours too. Jenn threw in 6 goals and Ally had 2. At one point,
Coach Jack went over to Lauren Keschner after her shift and said
"good job out there." She smiled and said, " I didn’t touch the
ball." She was on a line with Danielle and Jenn and not only did
that group score, they prevented the other team from scoring and
applied a lot of pressure on both sides of the field. Solid hustling
may not show up on a score card, but, it is an ingredient to the
overall product. If she doesn’t hustle, doesn’t have speed or cover
her person, the opponent will gain an advantage. Valla, Pastier,
Feigs, Ferber and Gladstone made some of their finest plays and they
never touched the ball. They positioned themselves well and hustled
and so did Lauren.
Kristen
made 11 saves in the net, a few of those were real impressive. Her
hard work in practice is really paying off. We will continue to work
on clearing the ball and that will help her raise her game. Kristen
and the team take the UNBEATEN record into June and we have a double
header on June 1.
5/8/08- Girls 5th grade Hills 13 – Lido 9 The undefeated season
continues. The girls have posted victories against the following
teams this year: Deer Park, Oyster Bay, Syosset, Bay Shore, Three
Village, Floral Park, Huntington, Garden City and Lido. WOW!
For two
games in a row the team and parents missed Coach Tony’s loud
instructions. He spent another game as a referee. I am sure he will
be ready to cut loose for the next game. His vocal chords will be
well rested.
Coach
Don has an anthem GBWG – Ground Balls Win Games. This game was a
team effort for many reasons and look at the number of kids with
ground balls: Brase, Lulley, Casadonte, Inserra, Kober, Valla, Feig,
Travis, Poretsky, Ferber, Koval, Goldberg, Reiser, Geringswald,
Anton, Muratore, Toles, Gladstone and Pastier. That is 19 kids that
have at least one scoop. Nine of those girls were on the team last
year. That means ten of these girls are new to us this year, and
that one statistic demonstrates the progress we are making.
This
Lido team had a lot of talent up front. Fortunately our defense was
up to the challenge and limited Lido to 16 shots. Outstanding work
girls! On the other end of the field the girls were just as
successful. As for the scoring, the goals were supplied by:
Casadonte 3, Brase 2, Kober 2, Goldberg 2, Travis, Anton, Caiazza
and Muratore.
There
were several standout players today. A few kids had the best games
of their lacrosse careers. Sophia Geringwald had two ground balls
and an assist and was very much a part of our attack. We had 25 kids
today and if we had fewer kids Sophia would have had more time and
even a greater impact, if that is possible. Alexandra Brase had two
big goals and was part of an attack line that solidified the win.
Emily Travis ran the midfield well and had three ground balls, and a
goal. It was her best game and several people noticed that she took
her game to the next level. Meri Koval had her best game and she
learns something new every game. That is the key to her development.
She made a few moves out there today and saved her finest run to the
cage towards the end of the game. She drew two defenders on the way
to the cage and passed a beauty to Nicole. That was just the way we
have been practicing it. NICE WORK and great assist.
5/3/08 - 5th Grade Girls – Hills 9 - Garden City 6. The game was
a bit strange. At game time we did not have a goalie or referee.
Coach Tony jumped to be the referee and the Lady Pride jumped out to
an early lead. At one point it was 9 – 3 and the girls were able
playing a fair amount of time under the two complete pass rule, and
that is what they did. Their passing has really improved. Earlier in
the week the girls spent most of their practice session on passing
and catching and they were rewarded for their efforts.
In the attack zone, Kober, Casadonte, Anton,
Inserra, Caiazza and Lulley played to the standards they have set
for themselves. Lauren Keschner and Alexis Toles are first timers
this year and they "complete us." The Lady Pride may be able to
claim that they have the two strongest midfield lines in the league.
With the team’s undefeated record, and the scoring and defense that
comes from the lines, certainly a good case can be made.
Last year Paige Gladstone was a first time player
and everyone noted that Paige improved every game. She has continued
with her progress and anchors our defense. She had 6 ground balls on
Saturday. Ground balls on defense seem extra sweet - outstanding
stuff.
This year the rookie of the year may be Marisa
Ferber. She is one of our best defenders and she is tremendous in
the cage. She had 14 saves for us.
We face Lido at home on Thursday. Some of their
core kids have been playing together since they were in
kindergarten. Game on!
4-27-08 - 5th Grade Girls – Hills 10-
Huntington 8. The girls took their unbeaten record to Huntington and
left with the streak still in place. Huntington has a reputation for
developing some exceptional talent in lacrosse. This was a strong
opponent with some gifted players and the Lady Pride accepted the
challenge.
The
team hustled on all corners of the field and we finally had the
debut of Alexa Valla aka "A-Val." Her athleticism added to the
overall depth of the team. There were some notable individual
accomplishments, yet, it was the collective team play that ensured
the victory.
The goals were scored
by Jenn Casadonte 6, Ally Anton 2, Mackenzie Kober, and Mia Inserra.
As for the ground balls, the following girls had multiple ground
balls: Casadonte 6, Ferber 4, Muratore 3, Anton 2, and Kober 2.
The next stop is Garden
City, another perennial powerhouse.
4/13/08 – 5th Grade Girls – Hills 10 –
Floral Park 4 The uniforms look great and the team looked even
greater! The season is young and we already posted victories against
Deer Park, Bayshore, Oyster Bay, Syosset, Three Villages and Floral
Park. The game against Three Village was exciting. We were able to
mix up the players a bit and the rookies are quickly becoming a
valuable part of the team. This is really noticeable on defense. As
for the seasoned players, the dynamic duo of Mackenzie Kober and
Jenn combined for 5 goals and 5 assists. Cheryl Feigs, Lauren
Keschner and Alexis Toles were given the opportunity play midfield.
They ran all game against kids with a lot more experience than them,
but, somebody forgot to tell them. They out ran and out hustled some
of the best midfield corps we will see this year. As their stick
work improves, so will our team.
In our three league games, we are averaging 10
goals a game while letting up four goals on average – a nice margin.
For most of the Floral Park game, we were under the three complete
pass rule. However, that did not stop us from putting up some good
numbers. It all starts with ground balls and the following kids had
multiple ground balls: Jenn Casadonte 10, Veronica "V" Muratore 5,
Marisa Ferber 5, Ally Anton 4, Meri Koval 4, Alexis "Tol-Z" Toles 3,
Casie Caiazza 3, and Sarah Poretsky 2. The following girls chipped
in with some assists: Jenn, Veronica, Lauren Keschner, Emily Travis,
and Ally. As for the goals, Veronica Muratore had a hat trick; Jenn
put in two more. Mary Reiser, Ally, and Danielle all put one in the
back of the net. The big story of the weekend was the level of play
with the first time players. Today Emily Travis and Alexis Tol-Z
Toles both scored their first goals of their careers. They will put
up a lot more in the coming years.
You know our team strategy for developing this
year. We want to play more games. As a result of this robust
schedule, we needed to identify another goalie beside Kristen.
Marisa Ferber is a team player and accepted the challenge. She was
tremendous in her first game against 3 Village. We gave her 12
minutes in the FP game and she recorded 9 saves. In girls lacrosse
it is often hard to find one goalie. We have two and they are
exceptional.
4/6/08 – 5th Grade Girls.
Hills 9 – Syosset 7. If Coach Tony handed
out game balls to the MVP of the game, he would have to split it for
Jenn and Kristen. We moved the game to 5 PM in order for Kristen to
complete the four week goalie camp. Needless to say, we are already
getting returns on her investment. This Queen of the Cage made 9
saves in all. Before the game, Don Casadonte got nostalgic about his
lacrosse playing days at Syosset which included the field we played
on. He said he was getting a good feeling about the game. He was
right. His daughter was on fire and brought the heat on a very
chilly day. The Casadonte tradition was alive today at Syosset and
the legacy will continue on that field. The girls will pull the
goggles down again on June 1, same opponent, same place.
This
week we counted ground balls. The following kids had multiple
scoops: Jenn Casadonte 5, Veronica "V" Muratore 4, Ally Anton 2, Mia
"Meeps" Inserra 2, Mackenzie Kober 2, Alexis "Tol-Z" Toles 2, but
none of them seemed to be more important than Sarah’s or Paige’s.
The goals were supplied by Casadonte 4, Muratore, Inserra , Nicole
Goldberg, Mary Reiser and Casie Caiazza. Jenn, Veronica, Ally,
Mackenzie and Mia all contributed with some assists. Nice work
ladies
Congrats to Coach Ted and the girls on defense. They held Syosset to
16 shots on goal; in the previous game Syosset scored 14 goals. With
the exception of Paige Gladstone, all of our defenders are playing
only their second league game and have let 9 goals get by them
– Impressive. Paige, Marisa, Cheryl,
Keri, Melissa, Lauren, Sarah, Hannah, Nicole and Claudia please take
a bow. The rookies have accomplished a lot in the first 100 days.
The future for this age group looks bright. The class of 2015 will
play at a high level for many years. Support; encourage and enjoy
the ride.
3/31/08 – 5th Grade Girls
If a team is only as good as their last game,
then this team is pretty good! It was a real coming out party for
the debutants: Cheryl Feig, Lauren Keschner, Keri Capadonna, Meri
Koval, Emily Travis, Marisa Ferber, Sarah Poretsky, Claudia Lomele,
Nicole Goldberg, Melissa Melone, and Alexis Toles. Coach Tony called
it the "perfect opener" but states that there is still plenty of
work to do.
